Keeping Your Cool
Staying Cool on the Go
When you're living the van life, the nomadic life, or even facing homelessness, staying cool can be a real challenge—especially in hot places like Texas. Firing up your vehicle and driving around the block every once in awhile gets quite expensive. While some community cooling centers are available for extreme heat, here are a few other options to consider:
Laundromats
If you can find a nice one, laundromats offer a great way to soak up the air conditioning and use Wi-Fi while you do your laundry during the hottest part of the day.
Pubs and Bars
These can be a place to cool down, but generally, you’ll need to buy a drink and look presentable. Since they’re businesses, hanging around without making a purchase isn’t usually allowed unless you’ve been personally invited.
Libraries
Libraries are excellent for getting out of the elements. They often have free Wi-Fi, restrooms, and seating. However, keep in mind they aren't always open every day and usually have limited hours. I have found though the different communities have different hours so one may be closed in one city and another will be open in another.
Gyms and Community Centers
Places like Planet Fitness can be a game-changer. If you're a Black Card member, you can enjoy massage chairs, hydro beds, and hang out in the VIP lounge—even if you’re not planning a full workout.
Movie Theaters
Not free, but a decent midday matinee can be a cool escape from the heat. Bonus points for popcorn and entertainment.
Shopping Malls
These used to be havens for cooling off and hanging out. But lately, it's gotten harder to find places inside malls where you can just sit without needing to buy something.
Shaded Parks Near Water
Parks with trees and natural shade offer relief, especially if there’s a breeze. Being near water can help too, even if you’re not going in.
Lakes and Swimming Pools
Sometimes, jumping in the water is the best way to cool off—just make sure you’re a confident swimmer and know the area is safe!
